According to Madan News, the global iron ore market until 2030 is on a path of moderate volume growth, but under the shadow of price pressure and decarbonization requirements; a future that is defined between the dual demand of traditional steelmaking and green technologies.
As the world moves towards a low-carbon future, iron ore, the fundamental material of industrial civilization, finds itself in the midst of a complex transformation. The outlook for this market until 2030 is a story of continued demand in emerging markets, the emergence of new steelmaking technologies, increased supply from new sources, and increasing pressures for sustainability; a narrative whose future will be determined not only by the pulse of the global economy but also by the speed of the transition to a green industry.
This outlook represents sustainable growth driven primarily by sustained global demand for steel, particularly from developing economies such as China and India. The iron ore mining market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 3.3 to 4.0 percent, reaching a volume of $313 to $436 billion by 2030. This growth is supported by expanding urbanization, infrastructure development, and industrialization.
A key factor shaping the outlook for iron ore is the global transition to decarbonization and green steel production. Technologies such as hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (DRI) favor high-grade and premium iron ore and pellets. This transition creates a dual demand scenario in which traditional blast furnace methods still dominate in the short term, but demand for DRI-compatible stones is growing rapidly, changing the quality requirements of ore.
Supply remains highly concentrated among a few key players, particularly Australian and Brazilian miners such as Rio Tinto, BHP and Vale, which control approximately 70 percent of seaborne iron ore trade. These companies continue to invest heavily in new projects to meet future demand. However, this concentration also increases the risks associated with geopolitical tensions and operational disruptions.
Market analysts predict that iron ore prices will gradually decline to around $80 to $83 per tonne by 2030. As shown in Figure 1 (left chart), this price decline is mainly due to increased oversupply in the global seaborne iron ore trade, which is expected to intensify with the launch of the Simandou project in late 2025.
However, the chart also shows that prices may recover by 2035 after bottoming out around 2029 as the market balance contracts again. Factors such as China's steel production reaching saturation and the growth of steel recycling will reduce the need for raw materials, although India's steel production is expected to continue to grow.
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations are increasingly influencing iron ore production, requiring miners to implement more sustainable practices and invest in greenhouse gas emission controls. These factors increase operating costs but are essential for long-term project viability. Automation and digitization are also reshaping cost structures and operational efficiency.
The emergence of green steel plants relying on DRI technologies points to a structural shift in iron ore demand profiles. Nearly 100 million tonnes of new DRI capacity is expected to be created globally by 2030, boosting demand for direct reduction grade ore. This emerging sector presents a potential supply shortage, and major producers are targeting to expand DR grade production to fill this gap.
Regional demand dynamics also differ significantly. As depicted in Figure 1 (right chart), China will continue to dominate overall consumption, but its iron ore imports will follow a downward path after peaking around 2029, reflecting slower growth and higher recycling rates in the medium term. In contrast, India's steel sector is forecast to grow strongly, sustaining demand for iron ore imports.
Ultimately, the outlook for iron ore to 2030 is characterized by moderate volume growth amid price pressure, driven by evolving steel production methods favoring high-quality stones and decarbonization requirements. Market concentration, ESG requirements and technology adoption will shape supply dynamics and cost structures. Investors and industry players need to consider these factors and the dual demand environment to effectively navigate opportunities and risks in the iron ore sector.
